While the time I have taken is more than enough for a lecture, every one of you will be expecting to hear something about entropy and the theory of GIBBS. Since the final ironies of a good tragicomedy are implied by the fatal misunderstandings of the opening scene, a few words will suffice. This existence of entropy for the processes CLAUSIUS called reversible could have been read off from mere rephrasings of equations obtained in CLAUSIUS’ second paper. Such, however, was not the course of history.
