Zusammenfassung
Die moderne Erforschung des Planeten Mars begann am 28. November 1964 mit dem Start der Marssonde Mariner 4. Die Sonde näherte sich bis auf 9850 km dem Mars und übermittelte Oberflächenbilder ausgezeichneter Qualität. Am 20. Juli 1976 landete dann die Planetensonde Viking 1 in der Chryse-Ebene und am 3. September 1976 schließlich deren Schwestersonde Viking 2 in der Region Utopia.
