Zusammenfassung
Der Raum zwischen den Sternen ist von Materie unregelmäßig erfüllt. Der Hauptbestandteil ist neutraler Wasserstoff [H(I)], mit einer ungefähren Dichte von 0,8 H-Atomen/cm3, was einer Dichte von 1,3 • 10–24 g/cm3 entspricht. Im Zentrum unserer Galaxis ist die Dichte der interstellaren Materie nur etwa halb so groß. Die Spiralstruktur des galaktischen Systems bedingt, daß der Hauptteil der Sterne und der interstellaren Materie in der Nähe der Rotationsebene angesammelt ist. Das ganze System rotiert nicht wie ein starrer Körper um sein Zentrum. In der Umgebung unserer Sonne etwa, die in 2/3-Distanz vom galaktischen Kern entfernt ist, beträgt die Rotationsgeschwindigkeit ~250 km/sec.
