Summary
Ground Pressure in the Felbertauern Highway Tunnel. The geological conditions of this tunnel of 5217 m length are first described. The tunnel penetrated the Central Granite and the old lower slate roof (Schieferhülle) of the Hohe Tauern mountain range. The authors then report on phenomena of asymmetrically directed ground pressure, which was observed over a distance of 1500m in the Granite, not in the area of the thickest overburden but under an overburden of only 400 to 1000m thickness. In the region of the thickest overburden the rock involved was quite destressed. In the area of high stresses the states of stress varied considerably from place to place. An extremly severe rock burst happened during the full face excavation exactly at a place where the pilot tunnel encountered a small ground pressure only.
The maximum temperature of the rock was 20° C. The fabrics of the rock favoured the occurrence of “Sargdeckel” (flat plated tending to fall down from the roof). Roof protection by rock bolts has proved to be a sufficient measure.
