In the preceding chapters a considerable number of metabolic capacities have been reported. On the other hand, the functions of animal peroxisomes are far from being classifiable under a common principle in spite of the peroxisome concept (Section I.C.). Nevertheless, in the light of new developments (e.g., the detection of a peroxisomal fatty acid β-oxidation), some unifying views of the metabolic functions of peroxisomes are presented in this chapter.
