Peroxisomes and Related Particles in Protozoa
Peroxisomes of Tetrahymena pyriformis are round or oval bodies 0.2–0.7 [im in diameter (average 0.4 (µm). They are bounded by a tripartite unit membrane 8 nm thick. The matrix material is amorphous or finely granular and displays moderate electron density in glutaraldehyde/osmium tetroxide-fixed specimens (Fok and Allen 1975, Hirai 1974, Williams and Luft 1968). Continuities between peroxisomes and endoplasmic reticulum have not been observed. Nucleoids are absent in the GL strain of Tetrahymena (Fok and Allen 1975, but see below).
