Microbodies were first described in the cytoplasm of mouse proximal kidney tubules (Rhodin 1954, 1958) and in rat hepatocytes (Rouiller and Bernhard 1956). Far from being recognized as cell organelles sui generis, they were considered to be precursors of mitochondria (Rouiller and Bernhard 1956).
