Part of the CISM International Centre for Mechanical Sciences book series (CISM, volume 564)

In this chapter, an introduction will be given on how to use the theory and methods of stochastic dynamical systems theory to understand phenomena of climate variability. We will restrict the application of this theory to very basic aspects of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation.
