Zusammenfassung

Der Einsatz von Musik im Zusammenhang mit Folter und anderen Formen grausamer, unmenschlicher und erniedrigender Behandlung ist in vielen Ländern und über einen sehr langen Zeitraum hinweg dokumentiert. Musikfolter tritt dabei selten als alleiniges Foltermittel auf. Jedoch sagen einige Überlebende, dass Formen von Musikfolter zu den schlimmsten Praktiken gehörten, die sie bei ihrer Inhaftierung erlebt hätten. In diesem Aufsatz wird anhand drei kurzer Fallstudien versucht, Aufmerksamkeit auf das Thema zu lenken und mögliche Konsequenzen für die Forschung wie auch für die Praxis zu skizzieren.

    Pieslaks Aussage entstand in Antwort auf einen gemeinsamen Beschluss der amerikanischen Society for Ethnomusicology, American Musicological Society und Society for American Music aus dem Jahr 2007, in dem sich gegen die Anwendung von Musik bei Folter seitens der US-Sicherheitskräfte ausgesprochen wird. Problematisch ist, dass Pieslak annimmt, Soldaten, die an diesen Praktiken beteiligt waren, offen zugeben würden, an Folter, mit anderen Worten: an einer schwerwiegenden Menschenrechtsverletzung, teilgenommen zu haben.

    Pseudonyme werden hier verwendet, um die Identität und Privatsphäre der Überlebenden zu schützen. Die Zitate in diesem Teilkapitel stammen aus zwei Quellen: Interviews, die in den Jahren 2010 und 2012 von Anna Papaeti durchgeführt wurden, sowie Aussagen aus den Protokollen der Gerichtsverfahren gegen die Folterer (Rodakis 1976), die im Jahr 1975 stattfanden. Alle Übersetzungen ins Deutsche stammen von M. J. Grant, hier basierend auf Übersetzungen aus dem Griechischen ins Englische von Anna Papaeti.
