Abstract
Encopresis is described by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10; F98.1), as the “repeated, voluntary or involuntary passage of feces, usually of normal or near-normal consistency, in places not appropriate for that purpose in the individual’s own sociocultural setting” (World Health Organisation 1996). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) classification (American Psychiatric Association 2013), is comparable except for the criterion of a shorter duration of 3 months (instead of 6 months). Also, it differentiates more precisely between the two subtypes with and without constipation (American Psychiatric Association 2013)
