Abstract

Biomathematics, or mathematical and theoretical biology, is a research field of applied mathematics. Biomathematicians use tools to answer biological and medical problems. They develop formal models and theories to describe the structures and dynamics of biological processes. Many fundamental biological findings come from biomathematics. Martin A. Nowak is among the pioneers of mathematical modeling of dynamic, evolutionary processes — from language and fairness to cooperation, which Nowak describes as the founding principle of evolution, in addition to mutation and selection.
