Abstract

Dendrimers, as hyperbranched synthetic well-defined molecules, have been suggested as potential antivirals from several reasons, such as their small sizes (nanometers) and their ease of preparation and functionalization. Importantly they can be potent inhibitors of virus–cell interactions due to their multivalency and capacity to display multiple copies of surface groups (cluster effect) required for processes such as initial virus–cell interactions. From many sorts of viruses, we focused to influenza and HIV virus. Other viruses, like human papilloma virus, swine fever virus, human cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex viruses are mentioned only briefly. Influenza represents a major health problem, as the pathogenicity of influenza virus is very high and there is still a lack of an effective drug treatment. Almost a quarter of million patients with flu are hospitalized every year in the USA. Death toll of “Spanish” flu was ca 20 ×106. About 20 million people globally have died in the last two decades due to AIDS related causes, millions of boys and girls, young men and women are infected and living with the virus. The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in 2010 was 34 million and AIDS deaths in 2010 were 1.8 million.
