Evidence and Rational Based Research on Chinese Drugs

Abstract

Various processed products from Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) berries, seeds, and leaves are used in China and other countries as functional food, dietary supplements, and medicines. Growing interest to this plant is mainly due to a high nutritional value of berries and potential health effects of leaves and bark. This monograph provides comprehensive up to date information about medicinal uses, chemical composition and analysis, experimental and clinical pharmacology, safety, posology of Sea Buckthorn extracts/products, their adverse events, and interactions with drugs. The results of pharmacological and clinical studies of the sea buckthorn products are reviewed with the aim to evaluate the level of scientific evidences supporting the health claims and the indications for use.

Further research on this promising herbal medicine seems warranted.
