Abstract

In the 1990’s the São Paulo Biennale met with rivalry from further non-Western forums. The Eastern European Biennale der Ostseeländer (Biennial of the Baltic Sea Countries) was founded in 1995 in response to West Germany’s documenta. As a result of the new political conditions following the end of the communist bloc it became defunct with the 15th biennial in 1996.
