Therapeutic strategies in alcohol and tobacco addiction

  • Chapter
Alcohol and Tobacco

Abstract

If an alcohol and/or tobacco problem forms part of the clinical picture of the patient, it is important to initiate therapeutically available strategies that meet the patient at the point that feels subjectively “right” to him i.e. the demands made on the patient should be modest at the beginning. This will vary according to setting. One can easily imagine that the therapeutic options available at the general practitioner’s are different to those in a homeless shelter or in a specific addiction treatment centre.
