Abstract
In the editio princeps, nothing particular is reported on this amulet’s discovery other than that it was found in the rural area of Mazzarino. The site is rich with Roman and Christian cemeteries and necropoleis; see D. Adamesteanu, art. “Mazzarino,” in R. Stillwell, ed. The Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites (Princeton, 1976), pp. 560f. Hence, this piece may well have been recovered from a gravesite, where such phylacteries are customarily found.
