Summary
Labetalol is an effective antihypertensive agent that has a good record of safety, as indicated by the Adverse Reation Data Base collated over the past seven years. The principal side effects are scalp tingling, acute retention of urine, postural hypotension, bronchospasm, and gastric disturbance. These did not occur with a higher incidence than those encountered with other antihypertensives, and were dose related.
