Abstract
Among the elements, which do not occur in nature, astatine is one of the least known, as it can only be studied in those places, where a cyclotron or equivalent machine is available for its preparation. In Amsterdam we became interested in this element after C. J. Bakker, who at that time was the institute’s director, had been spending some time with Segre at Berkeley. When he returned to Holland he told us that Segre had suggested to him the desirability of doing more work in the astatine field.
This investigation is part of the research program of the Foundation for Fundamental Research of Matter (F.O.M.) which is carried out with the financial support of the Netherlands Foundation for Pure Scientific Research (Z.W.O.).
