Zusammenfassung
Während man sich unschwer vorstellen kann, daß es aus wirtschaftstheoretischen und wirtschaftspolitischen Gründen heraus sinnvoll und zweckmäßig sein kann, einzelne ökonometrische Gleichungen aufzustellen und auszurechnen, weil eben ein bestimmtes aktuelles theoretisches oder politisches Interesse auf die Konsumfunktion, die Investitionsfunktion, die Gewinnfunktion oder die Produktionsfunktion gerichtet sein kann, ist der Sinn und Zweck der Aufstellung ganzer ökonometrischer Modelle nicht in gleichem Maße einleuchtend (wie denn auch die Aufstellung von ökonometrischen Totalmodellen erst in neuerer Zeit aufgekommen ist, während die empirische Wirtschaftsforschung schon seit etwa hundert Jahren einzelne Gleichungen aufgestellt und ausgerechnet hat).

Wold’s Begriff der „Kausalität” orientiert sich am Sprachgebrauch des Forschers, der kontrollierte Experimente durchführt. Zum Beispiel wird z die Ursache von y genannt, wenn es möglich ist (oder sein könnte), y indirekt zu kontrollieren, indem man z kontrolliert.
