Zusammenfassung
Die im 19. Jahrhundert sich anbahnende und im 20. Jahrhundert sich mehr und mehr vollendende gestaltliche Umwandlung der Algebra zu einer allgemeinen Theorie der Strukturen hat in der sog. Theorie der algebraischen Gleichungen zu einer Aufspaltung in zwei Teilgebiete geführt, die nicht nur in ihrer Methode, sondern auch dem Inhalte nach sich wesentlich unterscheiden. Das erste Teilgebiet, dessen Entwicklung durch das berühmte wissenschaftliche Testament von E. Galois 1), den grundlegenden „Traité des substitutions“ von C. Jordan 2), die „Algebraische Theorie der Körper“ von E. Steinitz 3), das Werk „Moderne Algebra“ von B. L. van der Waerden 4) und das Buch „L’algèbre“ im Gesamtwerk von N. Bourbaki 5) gekennzeichnet wird, kann als die Galoissche Theorie der algebraischen Gleichungen bezeichnet werden. Das zweite Teilgebiet, das seine Existenzberechtigung und Eigenständigkeit nicht nur aus der traditionellen Bindung an die ursprüngliche Aufgabe der Algebra, nämlich der Auflösung numerisch gegebener algebraischer Gleichungen oder Gleichungssysteme, sondern auch aus den zahlreichen Anfragen herleitet, die etwa die Analysis oder die sog. Angewandte Mathematik stellen, trägt den Namen einer Analytischen Theorie der Polynome, da es unter modernem Aspekt weniger der Algebra als der komplexen Funktionentheorie einzuordnen ist.
