Zusammenfassung
Die Geschichte der Elektrodynamik begann und endete nicht im 19. Jahrhundert. Auf der Grundlage älterer Erfahrungen und Theorieansätze entstanden zu Anfang des Jahrhunderts erste mathematische Theorien der Elektrizität. An seinem Ende lag die sogenannte “klassische Elektrodynamik” im Grunde vollständig vor. Zwar gibt sie nach heutiger Auffassung — von quantenmechanischen Effekten abgesehen — richtige Beschreibungen der Phänomene; dennoch wurde (und wird) sie in der weiteren Entwicklung der Physik immer wieder anders interpretiert.
