Shapers and planers
The shaper is a machine tool that is used primarily to produce flat surfaces. The surfaces may be horizontal vertical or inclined. Modem shapers can also generate contoured surfaces. In a shaper the work is fixed on a table, and metal is removed from its surface by a single point metal cutting tool, which has a reciprocating motion. Metal is removed only during the forward cutting stroke and no metal is removed during the return stroke. To reduce the total machining time, it is necessary to reduce the time taken by the return stroke. This is ensured by a quick return mechanism. Fig 18.1 shows a typical shaper.
