Abstract

The hepatic first pass effect is defined as the elimination of a substance during its first passage of the liver. The systemic bioavailability is contingent on the route of administration. The hepatic first pass effect is dependent on the intrinsic hepatic clearance, liver blood flow and liver architecture (e. g. intra-hepatic shunts). Interestingly the phenomenon of the first-pass effect was alluded to as early as 1893, Figure 1.
