Abstract
The input and preprocessing procedures create the necessary conditions for the recognition process itself. A number of general image processing methods are applied here in the phases of digitizing (creating a discrete representation of an analog image), segmentation (cutting individual characters out of the image), and picture enhancement. For an introduction to image processing algorithms, see [Daw 87].
