Part of the book series: Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics (NNFM) ((NNFM,volume 35))

Abstract

A high order scheme for the solution of viscous hypersonic flows with “real gas effects” has been developed. The scheme is based on an upwind biased total variation diminishing formulation to solve the species, momentum and energy conservation equations in the presence of non equilibrium chemistry. The approach has been applied first to assess the effects of different models for thermodynamic properties, transport phenomena and chemical kinetics on the solution of the flow over a 10° wedge at 8100 m/s and 61 km of altitude. Then, the effects of chemical non equilibrium versus an equilibrium assumption are evaluated by computing the flow about a double ellipse at M = 25, 30° of incidence and an altitude of 75 km.
