Zusammenfassung
Architekten gestalten ein Gebäude, aber das Zimmerhandwerk bestimmt die Qualität seiner Konstruktion. Das Zimmerhandwerk der Rechentechnik ist die Implementierung, die zwei von drei Leistungskomponenten festlegt: CPI (clock cycles per instruction) und die Taktzykluszeit.
Bei Analyse der Funktionen des zu schaffenden Gerätes ergeben sich unmittelbar von selbst bestimmte klassifizierende Unterscheidungen... Erstens: Weil das Gerät in erster Linie ein Computer ist, wird es elementare Arithmetikoperationen am häufigsten auszuführen haben... ein zentraler Arithmetikteil des Gerätes wird wahrscheinlich existieren müssen... Zweitens: Die logische Steuerung des Gerätes gewährleistet die richtige Operationsfolge und kann am effektivsten durch eine zentrale Steuereinrichtung ausgeführt werden.
