Abstract

The setting is Pangasinan province in Central Luzon of the Republic of the Philippines. The changes in healing practices since the turn of the century introduced by American influence have resulted in chaos, in competing beliefs and values. Age-old elements of esoteric knowledge are being both challenged and exploited. New diagnostic categories are putting into question old explanations. The lowland peasant farmers, fishermen and businessmen of Pangasinan are besieged with competitive marketing of health commodities and specialized healers.
