Zusammenfassung

Großbritannien beheimatet eine der ältesten Genossenschaftsbewegungen in Europa. Mit heute 8,7 Millionen Mitgliedern spielen die Konsumgenossenschaften seit Jahrzehnten eine bedeutende Rolle in der britischen Ökonomie und Gesellschaft. Demgegenüber sind die meisten der gegenwärtig existierenden ca. 1500 Produktivgenossenschaften sehr jungen Datums. Innerhalb der Arbeiterbewegung von Gewerkschaften und Labour Party ideologisch bekämpft, fristeten Produktivgenossenschaften über nahezu anderthalb Jahrhunderte ein gesellschaftlich und wirtschaftlich wenig beachtenswertes Randdasein. Ökonomische, soziale und kulturelle Faktoren in einer bis in die jüngere Vergangenheit hinein vergleichsweise stabilen Mischung sind dafür ursächlich. Die „Renaissance“ kooperativen Engagements während der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte ist vor dem Hintergrund eines (zumindest partiellen) Aufbrechens gesellschafts- und wirtschaftspolitischer wie auch wirtschaftskultureller Muster zu sehen.
