Abstract

Research conducted on the internet last year showed that about thirty universities and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) in Germany had institutionalized, to a certain extent, women’s and gender studies in one form or another (Brandes et al. 2002). This current wave of institutionalization of course programs, subject and research areas, in the form of either centers, institutes, or central foci within or outside the university is not yet finished. Two nationally financed institutions were only just established last year: the Competence Center “Frauen in der Informationsgesellschaft and Technologie” (“Women in Information and Technology”)1 in Bielefeld and the “Center of Excellence Women and Science”2 (CEWS) in Bonn. I also know informally of further initiatives that have not yet appeared on the Internet.
