Zusammenfassung
Mit GPS wurde eine völlig neue Qualität in der Ortung und damit auch in der Navigation erreicht. Obwohl das System für militärische Aufgaben entwickelt und in Betrieb genommen worden war, setzte verhältnismäßig schnell die Nutzung für zivile Zwecke ein. Die Fähigkeiten des Systems und das große Potential führten zu einer weltweiten Verbreitung und zu einer Anwendung in vielen Bereichen der Wirtschaft und des öffentlichen Lebens. Von hoher Bedeutung war der Einsatz im Vermessungswesen, weil eine sehr große Genauigkeit bei relativ geringem Material- und Zeitaufwand erreicht wurde. Im Verkehrswesen hat der Übergang von der bodenbezogenen Navigation zur satellitengestützten Navigation erfolgreich begonnen.
