Abstract
When a star approaches the neighborhood of a supermassive black hole, the tidal forces acting on the star trigger a vast range of physical effects that could yield unique observational signatures. Of particular interest are ultraclose passages of stars by massive black holes. These encounters could not only unveil general relativistic effects but also provide favorable conditions for the detonation of the star. This article presents a general review of the tidal stellar disruption phenomenon.
