Abstract
The aim of this book, as I understand it, is to examine the relationship of new or “alternative” forms of governance with principles of democratic decision making. It seeks to determine the conditions of compatibility of new forms of political participation with conventional parliamentary democracy, and, finally, tries to find ways of democratizing governance. However, by focusing on “governance”, the conference is not only interested in new profiles of private participation in the making and implementation of public policy, but also in the effects these new forms of involvement have on production processes and the quality of policy outputs and outcomes. In this sense, focusing on governance not only means to describe and analyze specific patterns of participation by different types of policy actors, but also to study the relationship between participation patterns and the capacities of political and social systems in problem-solving.
