Zusammenfassung
Die politische Kulturlandschaft der USA galt unter amerikanischen Soziologen zu Beginn der 80er Jahre als die komplexeste und heterogenste ihrer Geschichte.1 Unter den tausenden Gruppierungen, die in den USA als Bindeglied zwischen der jeweiligen Administration und der politischen Basis agierten, waren nur wenige, die entlang marxistisch-leninistischer Maxime für eine radikale politische Systemveränderung im Lande eintraten. Auf nationaler Ebene gehörten hierzu die Kommunistische Partei Amerikas (“Communist Party USA”), “Youth Against War and Fascism”, “The Revolutionary Workers Party” sowie zahlreiche, meist unbedeutende kleinere Splittergruppierungen dieser Organisationen.

Andererseits übten zahlreiche Kirchenpostulate auch insofern einen gefährlichen Einfluß auf die Öffentlichkeit aus, als sie der eigenen Regierung unterstellten, sich bei ihrer Strategie der Friedenssicherung über moralische Kriterien hinwegzusetzen (Option des Ersteinsatzes nuklearer Waffen). Politik aber versteht sich nicht nur als Konsequenz einer Ethik, sondern auch als das Abwägen des praktisch Möglichen. Die Respektierung verbindlicher Normen einer christlichen Ethik ist daher ebenso bedeutsam wie eine adäquate Beurteilung politischer Gegebenheiten. Dies gilt für solche Gruppierungen innerhalb des kirchlichen Lagers, die ausschließlich in den USA die friedensbedrohende Macht sehen und dabei die sowjetische Seite von ihrer Kritik ausnehmen. Wer dies tut, setzt sich leicht dem Verdacht aus, eine selektive Ethik zu betreiben, die weder politisch noch moralisch vertretbar ist.
