Numerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Flows Using the Chimera-Technique

Part of the book series: Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics (NNFM) ((NONUFM,volume 72))

Summary

The Chimera-technique has been implemented in the three-dimensional, block-structured Navier-Stokes solver FLOWer to enhance the flexibility of the code. Overlapping meshes can be used, which remove the constraints induced by the inter block connectivity. On the one hand the grid generation effort can be reduced, on the other bodies in relative motion can be handled easily.

After a brief introduction into the Chimera-technique implemented in FLOWer, a variety of applications will be shown, starting with validation test cases using the viscous and inviscid flow around airfoil-flap configurations. The integration of a flap-track-fairing on a transport aircraft wing will underline the idea of merging component grids together using the Chimera-technique. Bodies in relative motion will be presented for a train-passing problem. The simulation of the wake vortex encounter of a generic aircraft will highlight specific advantages of the Chimera-technique for resolving complex physical flow phenomena.
