Kunst als das Herzstück einer regionalen Ökonomie: Der Fall Los Angeles

Zusammenfassung

Ich möchte am Beispiel von Los Angeles die These veranschaulichen, daß eine lokale Ästhetik — also die Art und Weise, wie Menschen zeichnen, gestalten, spielen, imaginieren und mit Formen experimentieren — die Ökonomie einer Stadt prägt. So allgemein verstanden ist Kunst ein Produktionsfaktor und zugleich Schlüsselelement der „wirtschaftlichen Atmosphäre“, die sich in weit mehr als dem Umsatz von Kunstgalerien und der von einem Museum ausgehenden Impulse für eine Stadt ausdrückt. Ganz besonders werde ich mich mit lokalem „Design“ befassen, das — ob nun professionell oder nicht — als Vehikel ästhetischen Transfers dient: ein Mechanismus, durch den kulturelle Ressourcen ästhetisch ansprechende oder nützliche Produkte oder Dienstleistungen schaffen, die zur Grundlage einer Regionalökonomie werden können. Ich werde nachzeichnen, wie ästhetische Strömungen (als Input wie Output) nicht nur die Region Los Angeles prägen, sondern weltweiten Einfluß auf Ausdrucksformen und die industrielle Produktion ausüben. Obwohl ich mich auf die Region Los Angeles beziehe (die im großen und ganzen vom Süden Santa Barbaras bis zur Mexikanischen Grenze reicht), möchte ich doch verdeutlichen, wie Kunst generell und überall funktioniert.
