Zusammenfassung
In der Regel hält man Kultur für das urbane Produkt schlechthin. Ob man nun die Hochkultur mit Kunstmuseen und historischen Gebäuden meint, oder die Alltagskultur der Straße, es sind immer Städte, in denen Kultur erzeugt, ausgetauscht und wahrgenommen wird. In diesem materiellen Sinn schafft Kultur erst die urbanen Qualitäten eines Ortes; und bildet gleichzeitig ein Kriterium, das die Stadt von eintönigen Vorstädten und provinziellen Kleinstädten abhebt, andererseits aber auch eine Metropole — als Brutstätte und zugleich Reservoir kultureller Erscheinungsformen — von einer bloßen Großstadt unterscheidet. Diese Sichtweise übertreibt vielleicht den materiellen Aspekt, denn Kultur ist immer auch ein Lebensgefühl. Oder wie manche Anthropologen und Soziologen behaupten, bringt die Stadt verschiedenste „Subkulturen“ hervor, deren territoriale und ästhetische Merkzeichen nicht nur die unerschöpfliche Vielfalt der Stadt ausmachen, sondern auch Mißtrauen und Angst entstehen lassen. Allen diesen Thesen kann man nicht widersprechen. Denn die Kulturen in der Stadt sind einzigartiger Ausdruck ihrer Ökonomie der Symbole: die in der Architektur angehäuften kulturellen Bedeutungen, die Repräsentationen politischer und ökonomischer Macht und der Wettbewerb im Entwurf gesellschaftlicher Visionen. Im Konzept einer Ökonomie der Symbole spiegelt sich eine zutiefst materialistische Sicht von Kultur und Stadt; und vor allem herrscht eine fundamentale Wechselwirkung zwischen der Produktion kultureller Symbole und der Produktion städtischen Raums (Zukin 1995).
