Die Brennkraftmaschine oder der Verbrennungsmotor (16.1) ist eine Kolben-Wärmekraft-Maschine mit innerer Verbrennung. Ihr Arbeitsprozeß (34.2, 58.1) ist offen und unterscheidet sich nach Abschn. 1.1.3.2 von den anderen Kolbenmaschinen durch die Gemischbildung, Zündung und Verbrennung sowie durch den Ladungswechsel im Zwei- oder Viertaktverfahren (23.1, 23.2).
