Zusammenfassung
Ich werde folgendes Argument entfalten: Alle Wissenschaft ist ungeordnet und entgegen unserer ersten Intuition stellt genau diese Ungeordnetheit die Wissenschaft auf ein machtvolles und dauerhaftes Fundament.2 Dieses Argument betont die produktive Funktion von Heterogenität und steht damit im Widerspruch zu zwei einflussreichen philosophischen Strömungen: den logischen Positivisten der 1920er und 1930er Jahre, die Vereinheitlichung als Grundlage einer kohärenten und stabilen Wissenschaft betrachteten, und den Antipositivisten der 1950er und 1960er Jahre, für die Instabilität eine direkte Folge fehlender Einheitlichkeit der Wissenschaft war. In Galison 1997 habe ich dargelegt, dass das Vermächtnis von Positivismus und Antipositivismus wenig hilfreich ist für unseren Versuch, die Natur wissenschaftlicher Praxis zu erfassen. Arbeitsweisen, Modi der Demonstration, ontologische Grundlagen — in jeder Hinsicht unterscheiden sich die vielen Traditionen, aus denen sich die Physik des zwanzigsten (und des frühen einundzwanzigsten) Jahrhunderts zusammensetzt. Und genau diese komplexe Mixtur aus den Kulturen der Ingenieure und der Physiker charakterisiert die modernen physikalischen Wissenschaften.
