Abstract
Until the recent slowdown in the world economy, the Dutch economy has prospered uninterruptedly for practically two decades. As sustained economic growth, low inflation and unprecedented job creation concurred without sharp increases in wage dispersion and incomes, the “Dutch model” has become a catch-phrase for progressive European politicians pondering the possibilities of a new model of “third way” capitalism with a human face, sufficiently flexible and robust to face the challenges of intensified international competition, de-industrialisation, changing gender roles in labour markets and households, and ageing populations (Schmid 1996; HemerijckNisser 1999).
