Zusammenfassung
Die amerikanische Soziologie beginnt mit dem Sozialdarwinismus. Diese Lehre entsprach einer Gesellschaft, die sich in rascher Entwicklung befand, ohne diese als Last anzusehen. In Amerika, so hatte Tocqueville bemerkt, konnte sich jedermann ohne Mühe bereichern, und das Streben nach materiellem Reichtum erschien deswegen als unproblematisch. Es führte nicht zu der sozialen Frage, mit der sich die europäischen Gesellschaften schon im 19. Jahrhundert konfrontiert sahen. Wer sich mit den Schriften der Gründerväter der amerikanischen Soziologie beschäftigt, wird, bei allen Differenzen, die im einzelnen bestehen, bei den Sozialdarwinisten, Sozialpsychologen und Pragmatisten, ein eigentümliches Klima der Zuversicht bemerken, das an das Pathos des europäischen 18. Jahrhunderts erinnert. Während in Europa das 18. Jahrhundert kaum noch zur Debatte steht, während hier Aufklärung, Liberalismus und Idealismus als vorgestrige Positionen erscheinen, ist in den USA der Geist von Benjamin Franklin, dem Lehrmeister der amerikanischen Revolution,1 noch lebendig. Traditionen sind das Kapital der Erfolgreichen und Glücklichen. Während man sich in Europa von ihnen enttäuscht abwendet, sind sie hier noch das Fundament, auf dem man aufbaut.
