Unemployment in Europe: Characteristics and Causes in an International Comparison

  • Chapter

Abstract

For quite some years now unemployment ranks first among the most urgent economic problems in Europe. Although this applies to all EU member states, there are differences with respect to the level, structure, and causes of unemployment. In order to suggest a suitable therapy, it is necessary to take a closer look at the facts and to gain a deeper insight vocabulary into the special nature of the unemployment problem in Europe as compared to that elsewhere, e.g., in the USA and Japan. This is the purpose of the present paper.
