Zusammenfassung

Über die Vorteile, die eine Mitgliedschaft in der Europäischen Union (EU) den mittel- und osteuropäischen Kandidatenländern und ihrer Bevölkerung bieten wird, und über die Gestaltung der Beitrittsvorbereitungen gehen die Meinungen und Einschätzungen von Politikern/-innen und Wissenschaftlern/-innen weit auseinander (vgl. Andor 2000).

Grundlage dieses Aufsatzes ist ein Papier, das 2001 im Rahmen des UWE-Kolloquiums „Eastern Expansion of the European Union as women’s Political Task“ in Kassel sowie 2002 beim,Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers” zum Thema „Women’s Agency and Supranational Political Spaces: The European Union and Eastern Enlargement“ in Los Angeles/USA präsentiert wurde. Die Forschungsarbeit zu diesem Aufsatz basiert auf vorausgegangenen Erhebungen, die zwischen 1999 und 2001 durchgeführt wurden und Teil eines größeren vergleichenden Forschungsprojektes sind, das von der National Science Foundation mit Kollegen/-innen aus Polen und der Tschechischen Republik geleitet wird. Die Autorin möchte Iva Popovicova, Doktorandin am Department of Comparative Literature, Rutgers University und Professsor Malgorzata Fuszara, Institute for Applied Social Studies an der Universität Warschau (beide Mitglieder des NSF-Projektes) für ihre Kommentare zu früheren Versionen dieses Artikels danken.
