Elite research in Hungary: 1985–1994

Abstract

In the course of the last twenty years elite research has become established in Hungary. In the initial stage attention was centred on discourse and historical or basic research on theories and methodologies of data collection. Historical research focused on the two decades between World Wars I and II (Lengyel, G. 1989; Szakaly, S. 1987).1 The sources for this work were various records, encyclopaedias and responses to questionnaires distributed on the basis of net worth statements. However, even at this early stage discourse had commenced in those Hungarian establishments that dealt with elite research on the characteristics of various elite types. Elite research has been carried out — in collaboration with other institutions — since 1980 at the Institute for Sociology of the Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) in Budapest. The theoretical basis for the discussions was provided by almost five years’ research activity, which resulted in a three-volume compilation of international publications on the complex of questions under debate (Elitbiográfia).
