Abstract

The summer of 1971 was perhaps one of the very few carefree summers that Gerth had enjoyed ever since he started to teach. With his family, he stayed at his sister’s not far from Frankfurt in the Taunus hills. The family visited the home of his daughter, Julia, in a village along the Baltic coast. She had just made him a happy grand-father for the first time. He was generally relaxed, without pressing obligations to “produce.” The university teaching would not start until October. He was scheduled to teach Introductory Sociology and a seminar on Comparative Social Structures: Japan, America, and Germany. He had given these courses in Madison and felt he knew what he wanted to do.

Zieht die Bestechung nicht, dann wird zur Methode der Einschüchterung und schließlich des offenen Zwangs übergegangen.”
