Zusammenfassung
Thailand ist das einzige Land der ASEAN-Staaten, das nicht in Kolonialbesitz war. Die Zeiten moderner Politik begannen 1932, als in Thailand die konstitutionelle Monarchie die absolute Monarchie ersetzte. Bemühungen, den Staat vollständig demokratisch zu gestalten, wurden und werden immer wieder durch Militärjuntas oder Regierungen, die mehr auf die Genehmigung von Generälen ausgerichtet sind als auf politische Parteien oder die Volksmeinung, zunichte gemacht. Der letzte Militärputsch hat 1991 stattgefunden. Innerhalb von 15 Monaten wurde die Militärregierung jedoch niedergeschlagen und seither regiert eine Koalitionsregierung.208
