Abstract
The examination of future challenges that arise from the areas of economic changes, technological trends, internationalisation, the growing importance of human resources and the need for environmental protection as well as sustainable development prepares the ground for new approaches towards the management of R&D within companies. A generalized model of R&D management in the past and in the future gives rough guidelines for the design of new and advanced management techniques. As an example technological forecasting is discussed as a management technique that is growing in importance. Traditionally, forecasting was used only as a means to collect information. By taking the need for organisational learning into account, finally a new forecasting paradigm is developed.
