Under what conditions can cooperation emerge in a world where firms maximize their profits by establishing independent plans? The most prominent approach to the modern theory of the firm is probably Williamson’s analysis of economic institutions.130 Transaction costs explain under which circumstances one might expect transactions to be externalized (market) or internalized (hierarchy).
