Abstract
Every day, large numbers of passengers and considerable amounts of freight and mail are moved by air carriers. In 1993, passengers worldwide traveled roughly 1,960 billion passenger-kilometers via airplane. Several million freight tons were carried 249 billion ton-kilometers [AirTW94]. The 200 members of IATA (International Air Transport Association) offer scheduled and charter services for passengers and freight worldwide.
