Als 1941 in Amerika eine Firma gesucht wurde, die das englische Whittle-TL-Triebwerk herstellen sollte, fiel die Wahl auf die General Electric Company. Diesen Auftrag übernahm die Turboladerabteilung der Gesellschaft, während die Dampfturbinenabteilung eine eigene Konstruktion, das PTL-Triebwerk TG-100, entwickelte.
