Zusammenfassung
Bereits 1938 wurde bei Rolls-Royce mit der Einrichtung einer Entwicklungsabteilung mit dem Gasturbinenbau begonnen. Zunächst wurde ein von Dr. A. A. Griffith konstruiertes Turbinentriebwerk entwickelt, das im Oktober 1941 zum erstenmal, mit Preßluft betrieben, lief. Die Versuche wurden jedoch später (1943) eingestellt.
